After a busy time of track days here at BaT, we again turned our attention back to the BatSport team recently, with round two of our Caterham racing exploits. With our home circuit Donington Park the destination, our three Caterham R300 machines enjoyed some success stories over the two day event last Saturday and Sunday (19th-20th May), as they provided the supporting action to the Superstars Series Ė a series featuring the likes of ex-F1 stars.
At the wheel this time around we had Geoff Tubb, David McGilvray, and Kurt Hoffmann. Geoff and David are new to the racing scene, having secured their race licences during 2011; however being a regular BaT Cat hirers, both were more than familiar with the Caterham machines. Kurt, the official German Caterham dealer, last raced in the R300 championship back in 2009, and was keen to jump back into the comfort of the R300 cockpit.
Testing was the first order of the day on Friday 18th May, as David and Geoff took to the circuit to bank some laps. Much support came their way as they combined car and circuit knowledge, with Team Manager Doug Hands in control.
Saturday 19th May gave the guys the chance to put their testing experience into practice, with some high octane qualifying fun. With a competitive grid of 26 cars, David headed the BatSport team in 22nd, whilst Geoff secured 25th and Kurt a 26th place start.
Later that day it was time for race one, as the BatSport trio took their places on the grid, ready to ruffle some feathers. After a difficult season opener at Oulton Park the team were keen to secure some finishes at Donington, which they ticked off the wish list in race one. It was a strong double finish for the BatSport squad; as Kurt surged to 19th place, Geoff swept passed the flag in 21st, to give BatSport not only their first finishes of 2012, but also their first points. Sadly the red mist got the better of David and he found a nice spot to park up in the Redgate gravel trap just two laps from the chequered flag.
With Saturdayís adventure behind them, everyone turned their attentions to Sunday and race two. Again keen to define their 2012 championship campaign, a finish for David, Geoff and Kurt was at the top of the list.
Chaos near the start of race two saw the red flag halt play whilst debris was cleared from the track. As the race restarted the BatSport trio leapt away from the grid into a field full of hot competition. After 13 laps enjoying the twists and turns of Donington, the chequered flag fell to round out a successful weekend. David beat off the memories of race one to finish highest of the BatSport boys in 17th, just mere inches away from Richard Smith in 16th. Kurt followed in 18th place, with Geoff collecting yet more points in 19th.
All in all it was a triumphant weekend for everyone at BatSport, as they made their way onto the points board after just two rounds. The points table is very close at the moment with the BatSport drivers and those around them, and itís likely to be a competitive year for everyone in the R300 Championship. BatSport are currently 8th in the Teamís Championship, with a total of 25 points.
As ever a big, big thank you goes to the team and supporters for all of their efforts last weekend. The next round takes place at Brands Hatch over the 23rd-24th June, next time supporting the prestigious British F3/GT Championships.
