Round three of the 2012 BookaTrack.com Caterham Superlight R300 Championship took the BaTSport team to Brands Hatch (23rd-24th June). After a bit of a break since the last bout of competition, a hardy team of BaTSport staff again assembled to work their magic, around the infamous Grand Prix circuit layout, with David McGilvray and Geoff Tubb once again at the helm.
After banking the team’s best results so far this season at Donington Park last month excitement surrounded the arrival at Brands. Supporting the British GT/British F3 package, it was set to be an interesting weekend for the team, and with Geoff’s family in attendance everyone was keen to put on a good show.
Keen to enhance his expertise and secure his two signatures needed to race at the Nurburgring Grand Prix circuit next month, David took the opportunity to benefit from some top tips courtesy of racing driver Scott Mansell in the week leading up to the action.
The weekend began with testing on Friday, as both drivers enjoyed some practice laps around the challenging combination of twists, turns and lengthy straights on the Grand Prix loop. With the poor weather that had buried the UK recently it was anyone’s guess what David and Geoff would be faced with out on track, but qualifying on Saturday morning took place in cloudy yet dry conditions. After 10 laps David qualified 26th for race one, whilst Geoff’s qualifying session was cut short by mechanical issues and having completed just 4 laps he had to settle for a 29th place start.
After a day of watching the impressive British GT’s and other machines surge around the 2.43 miles of tarmac, it was time for race one at 4:15pm Saturday afternoon.
Again run in dry conditions, an eventful adventure saw David and Geoff each build on their qualifying performances. As others fell by the wayside, the BaTSport duo held on to score strong finishes for the team, as David crossed the finish line in 23rd place and Geoff 25th. Both progressed significantly from their grid slots, to make it another successful outing for BaTSport.
Following a well earned rest Saturday evening, Sunday morning saw attentions turn back to the R300 championship. A damp track on arrival at the circuit left everyone wondering if conditions would change before the second race. However, luckily by the time David and Geoff jumped back into the cockpit the dry atmosphere had returned.
Another dynamic tour awaited the boys in race two. Fortunately, unlike the 11 retirees, David and Geoff managed to avoid the drama to again build on their starting positions. Following a fairly close battle with Steve Devlin for a number of laps, David brought his Caterham home in an impressive 14th place, to also score the best result for BaTSport so far this season. Geoff backed up another sound weekend for the team to snatch 17th place as the final chequered flag of the weekend fell.
In a weekend that saw many suffer damage, BaTSport again fought through the chaos to improve on their previous performance. The next round will be one to remember for the team and drivers; the notorious Nurburgring will be the scene of the next on track challenge, over the weekend of 28th-29th July on the Grand Prix circuit.
David & Geoff prepare to leave the BaTSport awning for the first race of the weekend. Jonny gives Geoff some last minute words of comfort to calm the nerves and Sandras Sunday Special - quickly becoming a permanent fixture in the BaTSport tent.
