Circuit History
Like many race circuits Castle Combe started its life as a World War II airfield. The Circuit opened in 1950 and has enjoyed a colourful history with many famous motorsport celebrities boasting victory there. However, the circuit hit troubled times in the 1960's and 1970's, falling into great disrepair. It was at this point that the current owners took over and successfully restored the circuits excellent reputation. Controversial changes took place in 1999 to the circuit layout and the circuit was resurfaced.
Castle Combe circuit celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, highlighting its success as a challenging, well located race circuit with excellent facilities.
For a more in depth history visit the official Castle Combe website.

We rented a Book-a-track noise meter and read 89db 0.5m, 45° from the Exhaust at 4500 RPM The sound man at combe read 99.9..what the heck?!
It doesnt help that they do the sound testing right outside an open garage you drive through that will just incrase the noise being thrown about so be weary | | Author | Rating | Driven With | Save Date | | Jamie Gilbert | | Honda S2000 | 16:28 Thu 8 Feb 07 | Castle Combe was my first track day experience, and I'm happy to report all went well, and I had a great deal of fun. The format at CC means you have to run in sessions which I found ideal for the novice driver, as you don't need to worry about other drivers being a lot quicker than you. I also took a co driver along, which was helpful, as he could keep an eye out for the faster moving Westfields. CC is a nice wide sweeping circuit, which rewards the smooth driver, and gives newbies an excellent opportunity to have fun, and give them space to make mistakes and not pay the price. However in places there is less run off than you'd like. All in all, an excellent venue, especially if your a total track day virgin. | | Author | Rating | Driven With | Save Date | | Doug Copestake | | JDM Honda Integra Type-R | 23:40 Wed 27 Dec 06 | Although I'm possibly a bit biased towards Combe because it's so close to me (10 miles), I still consider it to be one of my favourite tracks. The combination of some very fast sections and gutsy corners really does it for me. If I hadn't driven Oulton before I'd consider this my all time favourite track. | | Author | Rating | Driven With | Save Date | | Ray Nutt | | Lotus Elise, Honda Prelude | 13:57 Tue 9 May 06 | Great track, frendly and helpful people. Misses out of 5 stars due to lack of run off. Over-cook a corner and it could be both painfull and expensive. | | Author | Rating | Driven With | Save Date | | Tim French | | Audi UR quattro turbo 240 bhp | 08:58 Mon 26 Sep 05 | Fantastic on 23rd Sept 2005 - very wet morning session - got completely sideways for most of it including a 100 mph+ drift at end of pit straight! What a feeling. Afternoon even faster but engine holed a piston on last session and some serious bearing noises eminated from the bottom end. Still was due for a rebuild anyway... Even stronger next year! Sideways is the best! | | Author | Rating | Driven With | Save Date | | Kev Duckworth | | Nissan 200SX - 250BHP | 09:29 Tue 12 Jul 05 | Great Little Circuit.

I love chucking my pug through the tight chicane on the straight, great fun! Did in on the rally supercar day with a big crowd, what a buzz! | | Author | Rating | Driven With | Save Date | | Richard Ives | | Astra Coupe 2.0L Turbo (195 bhp) | 16:19 Tue 7 Oct 03 | A great circuit for all comers. Turbo barges like me and Caterfields the like. With Tower being quite daunting as you need to brake VERY hard and drive out HARD before a quick left right through the 2nd chicane. Camp is fun and fast and by far the most exciting corner is Avon Rise, we managed 120mph in and 90 through it just before braking hard for Quarry. The esses required control on the exit to get Hammerdown right and safe, and judging by the tyre marks loads of people haven't. However, run off areas are good in most places so damage is low risk.
Great day, quite a long way for me, but worth it. Respect to Richard in his VX220 for a gentlemenly drive. Thanks also to the Marshals for looking after us and doing such a good job all day long. | | Author | Rating | Driven With | Save Date | | James Wyatt | | Caterham 7 Roadsports B, Caterham RS-B, Alfa 75 2.0 | 16:49 Fri 5 Sep 03 | Really like this circuit. Run-off levels are poor in places, but not places that are that likely to catch you out - the corners are quick so you'd have to be being pretty silly to mess it up. A few of the corners are truly amazing, a real rush, and overall the circuit flows quite well with no silly slow corners. | | Author | Rating | Driven With | Save Date | | Alastair Jack | | Renault Sport Spider | 15:00 Tue 10 Jun 03 | Mainly a fast and flowing circuit, although chicanes help equalise differences between mega-barges and Caterfields. | | Author | Rating | Driven With | Save Date | | Jason Holliday | | Elise | 11:01 Mon 24 Feb 03 | Zzzzzzzz. Speaking from experience when I used to race bikes, amazing how quickly you can get from Castle Combe to Bristol Frenchy Hosiptal in an Ambulance :-)
The new s-bends add something to the track but they also take aways the awsome feeling of lapping the old track at over 100mph average.
Demands respect and never be fooled into thinking that you have it sorted. | | Author | Rating | Driven With | Save Date | | James Hall | | TVR S3. Ultima Mk4 Sport. | 12:13 Sat 11 Jan 03 | Not as fast as before they introduced the 2 new chicanes, but still plenty of scope for a powerful car to get up to some high speeds.
If you get your braking right at Avon Rise, Quarry is a lovely corner. If you get it wrong, you can end up with a big repair bill. Also be careful at Camp. I've seen several cars mess up their braking and end up meeting the earth bank or the Armco.
Not my favourite circuit, but it's reasonably easy to learn, and can be rewarding in the right car.
Beware of the noise regs. Your car is often checked in an enclosed area which is surrounded by buildings, so it's easy to fail. I've seen standard TVR's need additional silencing to get on there. | | Author | Rating | Driven With | Save Date | | Jonathan Zink | | Rover 200vi, BMW 328 Coupe, Metro GTi, Rover 220 Turbo, VW Golf GTi, Vectra SRi, Pug 106 Rallye | 14:49 Thu 14 Nov 02 | An excellent track with tight chicanes and fast straights 120mph in most cars.
This trach suits both beginners and experienced drivers due to the variety of cornersw and the width of the track. Only down side now is you are only allowed to overtake on straights which means you can't explore your cars full potential easily. Massive run of areas if things do go wrong! | | Author | Rating | Driven With | Save Date | | Malcolm Roberts | | TVR Griffith 500 | 22:43 Mon 7 Oct 02 | Excellent circuit for a TVR. Quarry is OK with fast entry and straight corner-cutting line (not quite the 'correct' line), Camp sems to cause a lot of problems with over-enthusiatic drivers. Chicanes are a shame. One of the few circuits where you can hold 5th gear for more than a nanosecond. | | Author | Rating | Driven With | Save Date | | Ray Richards | | Mk2 16V | 23:27 Mon 29 Jul 02 | a we11 1ayed 0ut track | | Author | Rating | Driven With | Save Date | | Harvey Nott | | nothing TO LOUD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | 13:15 Sat 29 Jun 02 | avoid the noise man he is a pleb with the worst calibration in the country.

Good track.
Can pick up a good speed, build confidence and push hard, can't help but feel nervious into Quarry after that little dip. Almost flat out in my little run around down the main straight!
This circuit proves U don't need to buy an expensive track car to have loads of fun!

The track's great but is pretty fast for a Caterham with a large amount sitting at top speed. Quarry is a challenge to get right, chicanes are good fun - use all the kerb available. |
